New Animal Welfare Blog! [13 May 2008|05:33pm]

I'm a member of several animal sites and forums where there are always numerous posts about animals in need of either homes or medical/financial help. To prevent me from making numerous posts across sites each day, I've decided to set up a blog to highlight animals in extreme need of help, either a rescue or otherwise. These animals are from all over the country. It is updated constantly. Please check it out and pass it on to anyone you know who is interested in helping an animal. You could be saving lives like these:

The story of Zieki, who fell out the window. [26 Apr 2008|04:24pm]

**Warning** This post does request money at the end, not to be rude, just really in need of help. But not only money, your warm furry happy wishes for zieki or also very appreciated. I think the story itself is rather good too. Cross-posted through some cat loving communities, sorry if you see a repeat.**

I heard meowing on my way in the door one Saturday around 5 pm. This is not un-common as the downstairs neighbors have kitties that usually sit in the window and i like to meow back at them. Instead I saw a cat that looked exactly like Zieki, Kirstens little fluffy cat. Slight disbelief occurred in believing this was our cat, because he doesn't even like to go outside. So I scooped him up, concerned that he got out, but not too worried, and brought him indoors.

As soon as I put him down, I screamed, because he immediately fell forward and proceeded to flop like some horrible type of fish out of water. He had broken his legs! (i thought it was just one, but turns out to be both). This was a really horrible thing to see and no pet-owner should ever see their pets like that.

He didn't deserve this, he is such a nice cat. Never an angry thought in his cute little fluffy head. (Hes technically not mine, but we are very close and my cat Zander and him are good at being fluffy together) He is also not the brightest one, and I would never have believed he could be so brave.

2 broken legs! He was crying outside, but as soon as I had him in my arms he seemed fine. I was so impressed with him.

Luckily the huge cat hospital in Boston happens to be a short distance away, so he was in excellent care within a half hour. He was there from Saturday night to just coming home on Thursday.

While they took him away from us to check all his bones and then having to do 2 surgeries, one on each leg, I discovered some awful news. He had fallen out the window (3rd story) the night before! Me and his mother Kirsten had both been out that night and since we have a rather large house it was not unusual to not see a cat for a little bit. Turns out he fell out with the window screen and must have been knocked unconscious for a bit. Our downstairs neighbor found the screen and saw a cat (one of our 3rd roommates cats - Mio) in the window and panicked thinking she might fall out or jump and when she alerted our other roommate, I guess she acted like "oh whatever, thats weird". I'm really angry with her, she checked for her 2 cats (who happen to be rather nasty bitches I must say) and not for Zieki or Zander.

So the poor thing who doesn't like to be outside spent his first (and lets hope only) night outside in immense pain. Its so horrible.

But! The good news is that he made it through his surgeries wonderfully. Everyone at the vet fell in love with him and said he just kept purring and was happy to let them help him. When he came home on Thursday they said he probably wouldn't feel up to walking for at least a week, but he refused to even lay down! He was walking all over the place, exploring and enjoying the attention. He even jumped up on the bed (we tried to stop him of course) and did one of his most favorite things - hang out in a paper bag. He is doing so damn good and I'm really proud of him. Kirsten herself has been doing okay too, managed to stay mostly calm in the stress of all this including the financial cost. (There was never a minute in which we considered not to do the surgery, even though the vets kept asking about seeing finance people)

My friend made a quick website, where you could donate if you like, as the vet bills are over $5000 and we are rather poor people:

But more importantly it also has some wicked cute photos of him and should be updated in a few minutes with pictures of him looking all silly and shaved after surgery. We'll continue updating his recovery too.

Much love from out kitty family to yours,

Moderators - please let me know if you prefer this be removed or behind a cut or anything, I'd be happy to oblige. <3

Animal rescue in need of help ASAP [16 Apr 2008|04:13pm]

Please help our cause. I recently lost my job and the rescue needs some financial help to continue feeding and caring for the animals. We need bales of hay and bags of feed for the goats. Lots of food for the feral cats. Two geriatric indoor kitties need expensive prescription formula food for renal failure. One cat needs dental work as she is not eating. One goat also needs to see a vet. If you can donate, even if it is just a dollar, please click the banner. THANK YOU

Help a cat lover. [17 Oct 2007|11:54am]

I'm not sure if it's okay to post here, but I'm not sure where else to post. If it's not an appropriate post, I  apologize.

For the past six months, I've been living with the roommate from hell (seriously, from HELL). My lease is finally up, so my feline and I are striking out for greener pastures. However, my deposit is due this weekend, and my hours at work have recently been cut due to my company losing a big client. I've just started a second job, but I won't get my first paycheck in time. I know if I ended up without a place at the end of the month, friends would let me crash on their couch for a bit, but I'd hate to have my cat shuffled around, especially after being in a shelter when I got him. I've never been the type to do this sort of thing, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and this is truly a desperate time. Help a girl and her cat finally get a safe and happy place to live this weekend?
I have pictures of Beans, and a Paypal donation button, but I'm not sure how to post it here, but it's on my user info.

Cat Rescue and Adoptions [08 Aug 2007|02:53pm]

[ mood | happy ]

Hello all!  As a fellow animal lover, I hope this is okay for me to post here.

I am 1 of 3 boardmembers for a non-profit organization known as Rescuties, located in Austin, Texas (www.rescuties.org).  We are responsible for rescuing kittens and other cats from the local shelter, Town Lake, which is unfortunately a kill shelter.  We take care of and raise kittens to be adopted.  This includes buying lots of food, litter, and medicine; taking them for shots, microchipping, and spaying/neutering, and of course giving them lots of love.

We currently have several cats for adoption on our website and I would love for you or anybody who wants a cat to check that out.  We are in the process of updating the site with more pictures, information, and a new schedule for Adoption Days.

Speaking of Adoption Days, we plan on having more during each month so that people can come out to see the cats and will be able to apply for adoption on the spot.

If you or someone you know lives in or around the Austin, Texas area, we would really like you to stop by.  Keep checking the website for the Adoption Days schedule.

If it is okay with the moderators, I would like to be able to post a little something every month, with the cat of the month and any other updates.  I promise not to overpost or advertise as that is not what our organization is about.

Thanks for reading this and have a happy August 8th!

Cat with a bleach fetish..... wtf? {x-posted} [03 Aug 2007|02:51pm]

[ mood | confused ]

One of my cats is OBSESSED with the smell of bleach. After any time I use bleach - cleaning, laundry, whatever - she always comes up to me and starts rubbing on and licking my hands. Now, I know she's not going to be poisoned or anything because, of course, I always wash my hands very thoroughly after using bleach or any other potentially toxic product, but of course, it's hard to get rid of the smell completely, and for some reason, it drives her bonkers.

Is this some common cat trait I don't know about? Do I have any reasons to be concerned?

Today we had a bit of a scare. Our chihuahua, Snoopy got out of the yard. I was terrified when he almost got hit by 2 cars. We were able to finally chase him back into the yard but man is he fast!

I've never felt more like stone. Has anyone here ever tried catching a chihuahua? We never even got close to him. Lol.

PET OWNER NEED TO KNOW!!! [24 Jan 2007|09:03pm]

[ mood | infuriated ]

If you are a pet owner or love animals PLEASE PLEASE read this post!!!! (and I am sorry that this is my first post but the information is something I cannot in all good consciousness NOT try to share with all animal and pet lovers - if this can avoid or undo even one pet's suffering than it is worth it).

Because of the disturbing nature of the excerpts and information I am putting the rest of this post under a cut so that those who are children or too squeamish do not get disturbed or cause problems. BUT if you are an animal lover and you want to know how you can help not only SAFE GUARD your beloved pet’s health but also do simple things to stop a horrible and sickening practice, then PLEASE read this post all the way through. If your pets are suffering horrible illnesses or allergies and you and your vet cannot find a suitable reason why, then this post may truly help you and your pet!

Thank you.

Hello fellow animal lovers! [05 Jan 2007|01:11pm]

I'll try to make this short. I'm an artist from Australia and my inspiration is my animal family. I've only got cats and birds at the moment, but I've had everything from horses to chickens!
My cats are Devon Rex - Tilly, Licorice and Miss Muffet - and Muffet is something worth seeing, totally weird mutation! www.miss-muffet.org

The next day it died.

Two weeks later its Brother Brody is doing very well and I've decided to keep him because I don't trust anyone else to but the only way I can keep him is if i pay for his shots and for him to get fixed, all i ask is for you to read this story, check all suspecious boxes you see and if you can please donate amything will help... Plechostomus Algae Eater fish needs a new home. :( [04 Dec 2006|02:10am]

Is there anyone who has a fresh-water aquarium who has a need for a plecostomus (algae eater catfish)?

My 4 year old goldfish is on her way out (sadfase) and I don't plan on getting anymore fish to put in my 29 gallon tank- I am just gonna clean it out, wash it up and put it away until perhaps I decide to get something else later on (I have a 10g and a 29g tank).

So anyway... I'm asking here 'cause it is a waste of space/electricity for me to keep my 29g tank running JUST for my algae eater.

I live in MI, specifically the metro detroit area... is there anyone close by?

Anyone want him? he is rather big, but is a well behaved algae eater whose name is Mr. Plech. ^_^

If no one takes him I suppose I'll end up downgrading to my 10g tank and get like, a feeder fish or something... but I kinda wanna break from more than just my betta fish. -_-;;

I know he's not an -animal- per se... but he is still a living thing and maybe someone might want him :3

If this post doesn't belong... y'all can delete it. I just wanna find him a good home :(

Sadly, since I created my community, only 2 people have bothered to join it. One of these was my sympathetic wife. I think this may be largely due to the fact that I have no clue about computers and dont understand how to make my community appear on search pages when people type in a relevant interest. Anyway, I'll cut to the chase. I've created this community to allow users to share their views and opinions on dog behaviour. Having searched LJ extensively I cant seem to find anything similar and think there is a need for this type of community.

dog_behaviouris a community for anybody that has any interest in dogs whatsoever. Whether you have a problem with your dog, have had a similar problem to someone else
and have had success in overcoming it in a certain way, do you want a dog and want to ask a specific question to someone with the experience, whatever your reasons for being
interested in dogs, come and join this community.

Here's my lot enjoying the sun in the garden...they are Kiska (red and white malamute), Kayo (sable and white malamute), Koda (white akita-malamute cross) and finally Buddie,
the border collie...

Oh, if I wasnt allowed to post this in this community, please accept my apologies and duly remove...

tumors in rabbit [02 Sep 2006|12:25am]

ok here's the deal. my brother's rabbit has tumors now. she's had them at least a couple months now. she's ok, but one of them is getting really big now, and the skin around it is starting to stretch. i know if it keeps getting bigger, it'll probably rupture. but- my mom doesn't want to pay to fix hr since it's not her money. i'm broke (like really broke! no job and basically an allowance for getting around, stuff like that), and my bro's saving up for a car aince his keeps breaking down. i think he needs to take care of his rabbit and just wait a little longer on the car. i'm not even going to get into what he blows his other money on. we both still live with our mom (he's older) and don't pay bills or rent really (he pays car insurance sometimes and for cable but that's it), so there's no excuse imo to not take care of the rabbit. but no one wants to listen to me. when my rattie had her tumors 3 years ago, i saved part of my stipends to take care of her. so ummm since no is willing to take her to the vet to get operated on and i don't have the money to, can you holistically heal a rabbit? has anyone tried that? i just really need some ideas to help her. my brother i'm sure does like his animals but he can be a little neglectful. i mean he makes sure they get fed and watered but it took until this year to take our dog to the vet for vaccinations and she's 6 now
